When I first received Best Efforts: World Class Runners and Races by Kenny Moore, I noticed the impressive list of runners and coaches: Steve Prefontaine, Frank Shorter, Bill Bowerman, Bill Rogers, Ron Clarke, Sebastain Coe, Lasse Viren, Mary Decker, and many many more. What makes this book special is that it is told through the eye of the author, Kenny Moore, an Olympian (4th in the Marathon at Munich) who was competing with or running with all the greats discussed in this book. So, this isn’t a collection of mini biographies, but a collection of personal experiences Kenny Moore has had with the legends of his time.

A few weeks ago, I happened to be walking around Manhattan with my wife – something we don’t get to do enough now that we have a kid. As usual, I perused the running section at Strand Books, my favorite used book store. I found a few items including, Duel in the Sun, by John Brant. It is the amazing story of two of the greatest American marathoners (Alberto Salazar and Dick Beardsley) from the early 80’s and their incredible duel at the 1982 Boston Marathon.
