Last summer I happened to be in Los Angeles when Dean Karnazes was promoting his new book, 50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days — and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance!. I had heard about it and actually remember somewhat following Dean’s 50 marathons in 50 days feat, which ended in my stomping grounds, New York City. I missed his appearance at Barnes and Noble, but it did remind me how much I love his first book, Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner
, a book a gave five stars.

I haven’t read “Once a Runner: A Novel
” in a long time, so I thought it was about time to revisit the classic. Many runners seem to argue that this is the best running fiction out there. It definitely has achieved that cult classic status, which I think was partially elevated by its out-of-print status. Now that it looks like there is another print of the book coming out(get yours now before it disappears again for another decade), it only seems right to re-read to see if it is worth buying a hardcover edition as my paperback copy is showing some wear.

When I first received Best Efforts: World Class Runners and Races by Kenny Moore, I noticed the impressive list of runners and coaches: Steve Prefontaine, Frank Shorter, Bill Bowerman, Bill Rogers, Ron Clarke, Sebastain Coe, Lasse Viren, Mary Decker, and many many more. What makes this book special is that it is told through the eye of the author, Kenny Moore, an Olympian (4th in the Marathon at Munich) who was competing with or running with all the greats discussed in this book. So, this isn’t a collection of mini biographies, but a collection of personal experiences Kenny Moore has had with the legends of his time.

A few weeks ago, I happened to be walking around Manhattan with my wife – something we don’t get to do enough now that we have a kid. As usual, I perused the running section at Strand Books, my favorite used book store. I found a few items including, Duel in the Sun, by John Brant. It is the amazing story of two of the greatest American marathoners (Alberto Salazar and Dick Beardsley) from the early 80’s and their incredible duel at the 1982 Boston Marathon.

I think we’ve all wondered what the Kenyans and Ethiopians are doing that makes them so fast, so when I stumbled upon this book I had to pick it up. “Run to Win: Training Secrets of the Kenyan Runners”, by Jurg Wirz is an interesting read and a good book.
So, let’s get straight to it! Does this book reveal the secrets of the Kenyans? I think it does a fair job doing it. The first half of the book is mainly history, but in the second half the author explains the Kenyan diet, culture, psychology, and training philosophy. Although, it won’t make me an Olympic Champion, this new information made me rethink some of the training that I do and prescribe as a coach.
