When I first received Best Efforts: World Class Runners and Races by Kenny Moore, I noticed the impressive list of runners and coaches: Steve Prefontaine, Frank Shorter, Bill Bowerman, Bill Rogers, Ron Clarke, Sebastain Coe, Lasse Viren, Mary Decker, and many many more. What makes this book special is that it is told through the eye of the author, Kenny Moore, an Olympian (4th in the Marathon at Munich) who was competing with or running with all the greats discussed in this book. So, this isn’t a collection of mini biographies, but a collection of personal experiences Kenny Moore has had with the legends of his time.
I’ve read many biographies before, so this was a wonderful surprise. Since these stories are not researched, Kenny Moore is able to give you a unique glimpse at the personal sides that runners sometimes only share with other runners. The collection has a wonderful varieties of stories ranging from races on the track to the ultramarathon, elite athlete laboratory testing, and simple trips to the athlete’s home country (yes, Kenny Moore takes you around the world in this one – North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa).
This treasure is a compilation of Kenny Moore’s best writing for Sports Illustrated from the 70’s and 80’s. Even though I enjoyed some stories more than others, this book is an essential to any running book collection. Probably the best set of running non-fiction I’ve read. Buy this book.
