Running with the Buffaloes, Chris Lear

RYC-Rating:
"Running with the Buffaloes" is a well written, non-fiction account of 1998’s dramatic University of Colorado cross-country season. Chris Lear, a very accomplished Princeton University runner, shadowed the Buffaloes and Adam Goucher’s pursuit of a team and individual national championship.
Initially I was worried it would read like someone’s training log, but the diary format works extremely well. Chris Lear’s writing makes for easy and enjoyable reading. Without spoiling the story for you, let me just say that this season was worth documenting and there are just as many twist and turns and highs and lows in their season as one would expect from a work of fiction.
In addition to a great story, you’ll get a decent explanation of the legendary Arthur Lydiard’s training theory and how a Division I coach, Mark Wetmore, employs it.
A student of mine actually gave me “Running with the Buffaloes” as a thank you when he graduated. Since then, I’ve read it at least a half a dozen times. If you don’t believe me, here is one last proof of its excellence: Chris Lear initially self-published this book before the buzz was so loud that it convinced a major publishing company to pick it up.
