Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes

I've been meaning to write a review for Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner for a while, but I really wasn't sure how I wanted to structure this review, being that it is my first one. Well, I've settled for a NO SPOILER review, which basically answers the question, "should I read this?"
Before I get into the review, I have to address one common criticism of this book. I know that many hardcore runners think that Dean Karnazes (this is his autobiography) is just capitalizing and have gained heroic status for doing things that many other ultrarunners have already done - and have done better. As true as that may be, I still enjoyed this book. No, I REALLY enjoyed this book. Ultimately, if running for you is only about being the fastest then this book is probably not for you, and you probably think Dean is a joke.
On the otherhand, if you love running for running then you HAVE TO read this book. His story is inspiring because it isn't about speed, but drive and determination. He tests his body and mind and in the process he rediscovers his love for life and revitalizes his struggling relationships.
As a coach I see runners of all abilities, but the ones I am most proud of are the ones who always try their best despite their lack of tremendous physical gifts. They are blessed with the minds and hearts of a champion and testing their personal limits are all they are there for. This is Dean to me. Don't get me wrong, he is gifted. He just isn't abnormally gifted physically - but his drive is absolutely inspiring.
The book is very well written; easy to read, and to the point. I read it in two days. Some of my friends finished it in one sitting. The chapters aren't incredibly long either, so if you are reading this on the bus or train, or right before bed there are frequent stopping points which are convenient.
I highly recommend "Ultramarathon Man". I'm sure you'll enjoy Dean's extreme adventures and the familiar interactions he has with coaches, runners, and non-runners alike. Unlike many running books, this is one that I would even recommend to the non-runner crowd. So, if you have a friend, co-worker, or spouse that doesn't understand why you run, get this book for them or lend them your copy.
